to a Finished Work.

I am interested in the work between the beginning and the end

In September 2024, I was shooting in a studio, photographing my family and trying to combine piano improvisation with poetry. The results were rough: I was still learning to control my voice, and the notes did not always land where they should. But I wanted to keep going and watch the material gradually come together.

I then noticed that I looked at other things in much the same way. At work, I pay attention to how decisions affect an organisation. In science, I want to understand which experiment led to a conclusion and why that conclusion is justified. In photography and music, I like seeing how many attempts eventually become a work worth keeping.

A finished work draws attention. I also want to see the path that led to it.

Different activities call for different kinds of attention

In management, I work with people, constraints and the consequences of decisions. I need to consider how changing one part will affect the others. This interest extends beyond IT: I have tried applying agile approaches in dentistry, cosmetics manufacturing and even my own family.

With a camera, attention works differently. I shoot on film and digitally; I am interested in preparing a shoot, working with the person in front of the lens and processing the images. Sometimes everything depends on a moment that cannot be repeated. Afterwards, I need to pick out the frames that carry the story from among many photographs.

In music, you can return to a phrase again and again. Change the sound, learn to work with your voice, look for what comes next. In that post, I described myself as a beginner. Several tracks were already being prepared for release, but there was far more ahead of me than I had completed.

The process deserves a place too

For a long time, I mostly showed finished work. Behind that was a fear: if I shared an unsuccessful attempt, people would take it as the limit of my abilities. They would judge something that was not yet finished, and it would become harder for me to continue.

At the same time, I enjoyed watching other people process photographs, write music, train their voices or find a solution. For some reason, what I valued in other people’s work seemed unnecessary in my own.

The 2024 post was an attempt to change that. To talk not only about the result, but also about what lies behind it: the choices, doubts, experiments and work that usually remain unseen.

What connects all of this

Physics, astronomy, psychology, sometimes economics. Photography, music, sim racing. I am drawn to the chance to understand something and make something myself. Some activities teach attention to detail; others require me to hold a whole system in mind.
